There was a time when Charles Johnson was but an aspiring web designer with an interesting background in music. After 9/11, he cited experts to help readers of his blog, Little Green Footballs, understand the enemy. Robert Spencer, with encyclopedic knowledge on the subject, was frequently quoted as the authority on Allah, Muhammad, the Koran and Muslims. Charles described Robert as a “friend” with “voluminous knowledge of Islam.” Charles, the web designer, even helped Robert set up his critically important blog, Jihad Watch.

The Morlocks at Democratic Underground have suddenly discovered Robert Spencer and his voluminous knowledge of Islam—and of course, since most of the DUmmies can’t tell Mohammed from Maimonides, they’re in attack mode: The threat of Robert Spencer and the danger he poses to American Muslims.
And one of the worst things about this dangerous Spencer character is that he’s a friend of a certain odious Neanderthal.
Spencer has not changed in the years we have been following him online and in print. His books (we read them all) are well written, informative, scholarly, and supported by extensive references. His blog, today as ever, is a must read for anyone searching to understand the war launched against us and the nature of the enemy. All his work is thoroughly researched. He recognizes Islam as a rival civilization hell bent on eliminating ours, a rival civilization that, like our own, consists of religion, history, culture, several ideological movements, warriors and civilians.
It is always entertaining to watch Spencer match wits with Islamic apologists, quoting surahs and hadiths to illustrate his points. He never preaches hate nor advocates violence against civilians. He does advocate vigorous defense of the West. Isn’t Western Civilization worth defending? Check out the alternative! This is not hate (though it may appear so to the ignorant). It is common sense. Check out the alternatives.
Because he knows Islam’s achievements and respects its strengths, Spencer fears for Judeo-Christian Civilization. He knows that if Western leaders don’t wake up to the danger, we are doomed to the same fate as the Zoroastrians and Assyrians.
On the other hand, eight years after Islamists killed 3,000 on American soil, Charles Johnson, now web-famous, has forgotten what happened on that day in September. At least he seems to have lost the intensity required to win this clash of civilizations. Charles provides casual blogging commentary, not in depth analysis. Still, his recent derogatory comments (defamation?) targeting Spencer suggest that he does not have the depth of knowledge to differentiate between truth and hate.
Islam, the civilization, has been competing with the West since 622 AD. Its self proclaimed goal is to eliminate or subjugate Jews, Christians and infidels. WE do not slaughter civilians to instill fear in the heart of our enemy nor do WE randomly behead people. However, should we commit suicide by pretending that we don’t know that the enemy is a rival civilization and not just what in saner times Johnson used to sarcastically refer to as a tiny minority of militants? Today’s Charles Johnson seems to think we should.
Charles seems to have developed the view that bloggers who defend our civilization “too vigorously” are fascists. He sees fascists everywhere. Geert Wilder, a fascist? We don’t think so. The man is virtually sacrificing his life to defend our way of life. Resisting Islamization of our society is not fascism. Opposing Shariah Law is not fascism. Combating the Islamist supremasists is not fascism.
A search for “Spencer” on Little Green Footballs from February 7, 2001 to July 15, 2009 yielded 216 posts. Reading some of the older posts we were surprised by the saga. What a change! From lovers and best friends to bitter enemies. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Andrew Sullivan’s about face in 2004. Oddly enough, Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller, and Gates of Vienna have absolutely nothing to say about Bruce Bawer’s piece on the meltdown of the anti-jihad movement into a puddle of stinky fascist goo. Their normal response to criticism is to rant, rave, and spew insults, usually within minutes of such a post; yet today, two days after Bruce published it and gave permission for me to reprint it here, there’s nothing from them but a very loud silence.
A cynical person might conclude that they’re afraid to give Bruce’s article any publicity, because it shows that their little clique of fascist enablers isn’t quite as righteous as they like to pretend, and they’re hoping it will just blow over without much notice.
Not even Andrew Sullivan’s link yesterday to the LGF reprint of Bruce’s article flushed them out of their spider holes.
Looks like Bruce Bawer scored a direct hit.
Robert Spencer Confirmed to Attend Eurofascist Conference

Yesterday when we posted about the participation of Pamela Geller (owner of “Atlas Shrugs”) in a German anti-Islam conference organized by a group with extensive ties to neo-Nazis, the latest word was that Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch had not yet confirmed his participation.
Today “Pro Köln” has announced that Spencer will be a speaker at the conference: Translated version of “Robert Spencer on 9 May in Cologne”.

Hatebloggers Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer have really hit bottom now. What can I even say about this? It’s just sad, and utterly pathetic.
Complete with upper case misspelling, unnoticed for more than a day: Atlas Shrugs: NEO NAZIS LINK UP WITH CHARLES JOHNSON, LITTLE GREEN FOOTBALLS SMEARS BECK, THE GOP AND CONSERVATVES.
Geller is on to me. I’m an “infiltrator.” The only real question left in her alleged mind is “who is he working for?”
Robert Spencer, on the other hand, is intelligent enough to know just how incredibly dishonest he’s being. His website has descended into a true hate site at this point, dominated by extreme, bigoted commenters who regularly advocate genocide and mass murder of Muslims.
But if that’s the best he can do (dig up an obscure Canadian website that has a link to LGF), then two can play at that game.

For asking the same kinds of questions about Vlaams Belang and Sweden Democrats and other European political groups with checkered pasts that Bruce Bawer raises in his book “While Europe Slept,” I’ve now become an enemy to some people: Atlas Shrugs: LGF and CAIR.
It’s an absurd overreaction to some perfectly reasonable questions, and I expected better from Pamela. As for CAIR “getting their talking points” from me, that’s even more ludicrous. The information about these right-wing European parties is not exactly hidden—in fact, it’s all over the web. A few sentences at LGF urging caution are a drop in the ocean.
Just for the record, I’ve been in contact with Robert Spencer about this issue and his reaction was nothing like what you see at Atlas’s site; he understood the need to be careful about some of the parties in Europe and took no offense at my comments. If you don’t believe me (since I’m now apparently the enemy), ask him yourself.
What a disappointment. Pamela: I hope you’ll take a step back and turn down the rhetoric, and see that the points I raised in this post are not unreasonable—because they’re going to keep coming up, whether from me or others. If you start attacking friends and ignoring the issue, the issue’s not going to go away. But the friends will.
